The construction of a Veterans Memorial became a topic of discussion in the early 2000s when City staff was approached by Bill Studer regarding the donation of a F-86 Sabre jet that he was storing on his farm land. Studer Farm had recently been purchased by Joe Miller of Country Joe Homes and a new home for the jet was needed. A committee was organized in August of 2005 with volunteers, City staff, advisory committee members and others to plan and oversee the construction of the memorial. Wings of the North assisted with the storage and relocation of Mr. Studer's jet, Charles Radloff designed a concept around the jet as the main focal point, Roger Sandoff and Joe Miller assisted with securing at-cost and in-kind construction services and materials. An official groundbreaking was held on May 29, 2006. The project was funded primarily through donations, $175,000 in cash, labor and materials was donated by an estimated 50 local businesses. Additional cash donations of $13,000 were received from the general public. Sponsorships of flagpoles, benches and other amenities were sold as well. A dedication for the memorial was held on November 11, 2006 with the project still in progress.
The Gardens at the Memorial project began in 2008 with memorial plaques being the primary funding source. Volunteers from the community and Eagle Scouts assisted with the purchase of plantings, installation and upkeep of the gardens. Kevin Miller, Eisele Greenhouse and the Lakeville Garden Club continue to fund and maintain the gardens. The Veterans Trail with memorial benches and dedication plaque was constructed in 2016.
In 2019, VFW Post 210 worked with City staff on the installation of a Freedom Rock. The Freedom Rocks originate in Iowa and are located in various locations throughout the entire state. The Freedom Rock placed at Aronson Park was the second one to be placed in Minnesota. The piece was dedicated and unveiled as part of their 100Th Year celebration as a tribute to service men and women and their families. Depicted on the rock are Minnesota veterans who served in World War II and the Vietnam War. Artist – Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II
